In Spring, flowers start to blossom, some trees are growing
back their leaves, and by the river in Reno, the sound of young birds twittering
fills the air. What signs of spring can you see where you live?
In this project you make a stamp by attaching string to a cardboard cutout and
then print spring scenes on paper. Great for all ages - encourage even the
youngest children, with a little help, to try out this technique.
YOU WILL NEED:
Materials:
* Cardboard – check your recycling bin!
* White glue
* String or yarn
* Colored paints (we used tempera)
* Colored paper
Equipment:
* Scissors
* Palette for paint (we used a paper plate)
* Paintbrush (optional)
PROCEDURE:
Making the Stamp:
- Cut
out the cardboard in any shape you desire (we used flowers and leaves).
- Cover
the cardboard with a coat of glue and stick pieces of the string onto your
stamp around the outline of your shape, or in any design you like. Leave to
dry.
Making your prints:
- If
you want to use a paintbrush, dab the paint on the string parts of your
stamp – OR – simply dab the stamp into the paint on your pallet. You can
be as neat or as messy as you like! Experiment with different amounts of
paint.
- Press
your ‘string stamp’ down on to the colored paper.
- Cut
out the shapes and make a card, or just stamp your design all over a piece
of paper for a fabulous spring gift. You can re-use the stamp over and over,
try lots of colors and design ideas.
