Lesson #37
Ab-ORIGINAL Name Banners

These whimsical name banners were inspired by the “dot” paintings of the aboriginal people who are native to Australia. These beautiful paintings were once used exclusively in spiritual ceremonies and are now created as one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork that native artists now sell to the public. Try names or inspiring words like Love, Freedom or Art. Create one along with your child as they are really fun and relaxing to make.

You will need:
Paper banner-card stock, poster board or tag board
Black and a large variety of other colors-tempera paint/poster paint or acrylic
Paintbrush size 8-10
Pencil
Q-tips
Palette or paper plate

  1. When choosing a color for the banner brightly colored earth-tones will look fabulous and will keep with the spirit of the earthly aboriginal colors that are used in most of their “dot” paintings.
  2. Children will first write their name/word large in pencil then go over it with the black paint using the paintbrush. Lines should be thick. Allow to dry.
  3. Prepare palette using as many colors as available. Have plenty of Q-tips on hand, these will be your tool to make the dots.
  4. Once dry have child dip the tip only of the Q-tip in desired color and press/print dots on and around the word. Explain how to build patterns to child and help them to develop different colorful patterns for each letter.
  5. Press hard on the Q-tip for larger dots and lightly for smaller ones. Small dots can go inside larger dots once dry.
